With construction on the World Trade Center Memorial about to begin, a group said to include 9/11 family members, several hundred police officers, union people, firefighters and emergency workers, protested at Ground Zero on Feb. 28, 2006 against an underground memorial that will display the names of the 9/11 victims. Some call the underground local disrespectable.

The ?EUR??,,????'??Take Back the Memorial?EUR??,,????'?? group (takebackthememorial.com) is campaigning against an underground memorial and objecting to what it says is the Port Authority?EUR??,,????'???s ?EUR??,,????'??wishes to retain a waiver that allows it to not meet New York City building and fire codes.?EUR??,,????'?? The website asserts the Port Authority has ?EUR??,,????'??resisted calls by the Uniformed Firefighters Association for the FDNY?EUR??,,????'???s Chief of Department to conduct a safety review of the memorial plans.?EUR??,,????'??

The Lower Manhattan Development Corp., an appointed 13-member panel that chose the memorial design, reports the memorial and museum will have 15 exits, including emergency stairwells.
