AUSTIN, Texas - The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) is inviting landscapers, sports turf managers, land developers and construction contractors to attend a series of workshops to help them learn how compost and mulch applications can improve their landscaping, reduce erosion, control sediment from storm runoff and save money. The workshops will demonstrate the use and benefits of compost, and ways to use compost beyond the garden in revegetation and new construction projects. The sessions will also inform landscape managers on how they can cut water usage by 50 percent and also reduce fertilization and pesticide costs. Sports turf managers will learn how to revive worn athletic fields and how Texas Department of Transportation landscape architects use compost-amended soils to revegetate right-of-ways and how mulches are used for erosion and sediment control. The workshops are from 7:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m., except for Amarillo, which is 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Cost to attend is $30. For more information and a complete list of workshop dates and locations, click on the TCEQ website, www.tnrcc.state.tx.us/exec/oppr/compost/workshops.html.
