Gordon provided concept development, site plan/ construction drawings, and con- struction administration services for a new urban recreation park in Herndon, VA. Situated between office and residential buildings, this park was designed as a mul- ti-generational facility that could serve different demographics depending on the day of the week.
Features include a synthetic turf wiffle ball/ kickball field, a multi-purpose court striped for futsal and basketball, racketball/ practice tennis, bocce/ cornhole; and other amenities such as a playground, seating and picnic areas. This park begins to look at how to deal with tight urban spaces that provide an array of things to do for all types of users and abilities. Special attention was paid to the aesthetics of the park. In addition to creating a peaceful natured themed color palette for the mate- rials, the site design included native plantings to minimize maintenance and attract birds and butterflies.

 
The challenge with this site was designing a fully functional park where half the site is below a high transmission power easement. We obtained permission from Domin- ion Energy, and designed features and amenities within the policy guidelines. This included locations of metal components to not cause arcs from the power lines.
As part of a larger mixed use development near a metro stop, the design of this site was key to the overall approval of the project. Gordon provided presentation and graphic support during the zoning process to gain County and Community support as well as for the Client to visualize the design and color choices.

The upcoming Parks Issue of Landscape Architect and Specifier News saw many firms submit their projects for feature consideration. This project was not chosen for a Feature in the issue, but we at LandscapeArchitect.com thought the project deserved to be showcased online . . .
