The documentary film, Women in the Dirt by Carolann Stoney, celebrates seven women who have paved the way for future landscape architects.
The film has had a number of screenings, but the official premiere is Oct. 29th at the San Diego Natural History Museum. The museum is located at 1788 El Prado in Balboa Park, close to downtown San Diego.
The event will begin at 6:30 p.m. with a reception and discussion with the director. The premiere is presented in association with: the San Diego Botanic Garden, San Diego Floral Association, San Diego Horticultural Society, San Diego Chapter of the Association of Professional Landscape Designers (APLD), and Women?EUR??,,????'?????<????????????EUR??,,??s Museum of California.
Here is a look at these seven women with some of their contributions, awards and education.

Andrea Cochran, FASLA, Andrea Cochran Landscape Architecture. Cochran most recently received a Cooper Hewitt National Design award. A couple of her projects include the Children?EUR??,,????'?????<????????????EUR??,,??s Maze at the Festival of Gardens Sonoma, Calif., and the Portland Art Museum. Andrea Cochran holds a MLA from the Harvard Graduate School of Design.
Cheryl Barton, FASLA, O|CB. Barton not only worked as a landscape architect on Rosie the Riveter Memorial in Richmond, Calif., but also as an artist. She holds an undergraduate degree in geology and a MLA from the Harvard Graduate School of Design.
Isabelle Greene, FASLA, Isabelle Greene & Associates, Inc. She is the granddaughter of Henry Mather Greene of Greene & Greene Architects, ?EUR??,,????'?????<????????pioneers of the early Craftsman movement in Southern California. Greene holds a Bachelor of Arts botany from UCLA, in California taxonomy.
Katherine Spitz, AIA, Katherine Spitz Associates, Inc. Landscape Architecture. Spitz is responsible for several international projects, such as the Lao Lao Bay Resort in Saipan and various streetscapes throughout California. She holds a B.A. in art from the University of California, Santa Barbara and a MLA and Master of Architecture from the University of California, Los Angeles.
Lauren Melendrez, FASLA, Melendrez. Melendrez has a vast knowledge of urban design issues and has been appointed to many boards, task forces, and committees within Los Angeles. Melendrez holds a Bachelor of Science in Landscape Architecture from California State Polytechnic University Pomona.
Mia Lerher, FASLA, Mia Lerher + Associates Landscape Architecture. Lerher is currently working on the L.A. River Project, a 32 mile-long concrete basin in Los Angeles County. Although the project is set to take the next two decades to complete it will change the face of Los Angeles. Lehrer has a B.A. in Environmental Design from Tufts University and a MLA from the Harvard Graduate School of Design.
Pamela Palmer, Artecho. Palmer?EUR??,,????'?????<????????????EUR??,,??s primary focus is on residential design, and she is known for incorporating water into her work. She holds a B.S. in art from UCLA and a MLA from the Harvard Graduate School of Design.
