Winter Gardening First Aid





For gardens that still require maintenance in the winter, weather hazards such as extended rain, heavy winds, even drought can threaten their well-being. A gardening expert weighs in to help heal customers' gardens.

In areas of the country where winter cold does not does completely shut down gardening maintenance work, other winter threats exist that can severely debilitate your customers' gardens. In a recent Farmers' Almanac Newsletter, Kevin Cutlip, a personal garden coach for over 25 years and the owner of KevinsGarden.com, listed some of these threats and gave tips for keeping gardens healthy.

One of the greatest concerns is extended periods of rain and flooding, which will drown certain plants. Cutlip has various recommendations for that including guidance on drainage, pruning and adding supplements. Other winter hazards examined include drought, excessive snow/ice, and heavy winds. Cutlip's principal advice is, "Basics are only what the plants want, overdoing it can cause harm. Sometimes benevolent neglect is the key during harsh extremes."
