Who Needs A New Park?

Most communities seek more green space and recreational areas, but perhaps not residents of Penn Township in Westmore-land County, Pa. who attended an August 30, 2005 meeting of the Penn-Trafford Area Recreation Commission (PTARC) regarding a master site plan for the 21-acre site on Government Rd. acquired from the local school district. PTARC hired Pashek Associates, a landscape architectural firm from Pittsburgh, to develop the property into the PTARC Park at Sunrise.

The local paper, the Tribune-Review, reports that many of the 60 residents attending the meeting favored leaving the area as it is, but perhaps with some enhancements. The chief concern was traffic the new park would generate.

Vince Rozzi, landscape architect, presented preliminary designs for the recreational park. Ideas include an outdoor pool, a soccer practice field, walking and biking trails, tennis courts and picnic pavilions. Also suggested was an indoor rec center with basketball courts, fitness rooms and a teen center. One resident was quoted as saying the new park was not needed because people use nearby fields for soccer, biking, hiking and horseback riding.

Another meeting is scheduled next month.
