Massachusetts?EUR??,,????'??? Whitman Park, originally designed in 1900 by the firm of legendary landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted, has just been nominated to the coveted National Register of Historic Places. While restoring historic Whitman Park, Friends of the Park used grant money to hire researcher, Joan Rockwell, to look into the park?EUR??,,????'???s 19th Century history. Rockwell's research discovered that in 1880 Augustus Whitman donated 12 acres of his back pasture?EUR??,,????'??+open, two-pond meadows full of scrub brush and hardwood, as the town park. The site was later expanded to nearly 15 acres with an 1882 land-gift from Caroline Whitman followed by purchase of additional land in 1887. By 1990, John Charles Olmsted had began a preliminary design for the park, consistent with the design approach of Frederick Law Olmsted which sought to create a well-balanced relationship between natural and manmade site elements. John Charles has achieved his goal?EUR??,,????'??+to provide recreation, relaxation, enjoyment of nature and a place for friendly citizen interaction. The nomination of Whitman Park, is now awaiting formal approval from the national level, which should conclude within 2004.
