What Are Chip on Board LEDs?

LED Bishops Crook Series has Chip on Board LEDs. At the heart of the Bishops Crook LED luminaire is Sentry Products directional optics, which work in tandem with the refractive globe to optimize light distribution while providing comfortable, pleasing illumination.

You may have started to hear about a new type of LED product called Chip On Board. Actually, Chip On Board does not refer to a new type of LED. Rather, it refers to a method of packaging LED chips to attain certain features and benefits.

The conventional application of LEDs in luminaires involves the mounting of individual LEDs onto a printed circuit board, and then using small lenses and reflectors to direct the light. But with Chip On Board LED modules, the LED chips are mounted directly to a substrate material in a densely packed fashion. The LED chips are then covered with a disk of phosphor-coated material. The result is a small, round package of LEDs that some say resembles a fried egg.

Benefits of Chip on Board LED modules include:
Small Light Emitting Surface: Often, the light emitting surface is no larger than a dime. This allows the COB module to perform similarly to a point source, which helps improve optical control.

Light output: With the use of high power LEDs, COB modules can put out a tremendous amount of light, perhaps as much as 9000 lumens. This allows them to be used for high mounting height applications like street lighting.

Uniformity of color and output: The arrangement of LED chips with the use of a uniform phosphor layer creates a very homogenous luminous field.

Improved heat dissipation: LED chips are mounted directly to the heat sink (ceramic or aluminum substrate). This improves the dissipation of heat, which improves the lumen output and life of the COB module.

Reduced cost: The COB module and its manufacturing process are less costly than the implementation of conventional printed circuit boards with individually mounted and lensed LEDs.

Small module size: The COB module may vary in size from 1 to 2 inches. It provides manufacturers with flexibility in the selection and placement of the COB module inside of a luminaire.
