First time passengers flying into Palm Springs see vast expanses of barren desert landscape out the plane windows, and so are a bit surprised upon landing to see a landscape of grass and flowers.
The Southern California community of Palm Springs is, however, fighting over that airport landscape.
Palm Springs International Airport officials are pitted against the planning commission, city council and the architectural advisory committee.
The airport people like what they have, or even something more lush.
The anti-grass folks want an airport landscape of native desert plants that require little water and will save the city money. These advocates point out that a desert landscaping doesn’t have to be just rocks and cacti.
Some suggest a native landscape, but keep a touch of grass and flowers.
The Desert Water Agency recently changed out its grass in favor of native plants, saving an estimated 50 to 75 percent in water consumption.
