Nation's Wetland Loss is Cause for Alarm

ORLANDO, FL

Wetlands like the pictured Everglades National Park-- especially those with flowing water-- are extremely valuable because of the large number and variety of plants and wildllife they shelter and attract.

Estimates of wetlands that historically existed in California range from 3 to 5 million acres; Florida wetlands are generally estimated to have had once covered about 20 million acres of the state's total 38 million.

Today, California only has 450,000 acres; this represents an 85 to 90 percent reduction-- the greatest percentage loss in the nation. Wetlands currently cover approximately 30 percent of Florida's total land acreage.
