Story HereA decision made last fall by The Metropolitan Area Planning Commission (MAPC) and county commissioners is under fire in an editorial from The Wichita Eagle. At the time, a future residential site development received approval for a 31-acre pond located three miles south of Wichita Mid-Continent Airport.
Planning staffers at the time concluded the plan couldn?EUR??,,????'?????<???????????????????????(R)?EUR??,,????'????t comply with FAA regulations. Assistant director of airports Brad Christopher also advised MAPC that approval could not only risk lives, but also result in the 1.6 million passenger-a-year airport losing it?EUR??,,????'?????<???????????????????????(R)?EUR??,,????'????s operating certificate. However, the MAPC and County Commission approved the pond anyway.
Commission Chairman Kelly Parks now wants the county to take another look at the issue and perhaps consider a moratorium on new ponds and other water features near the county?EUR??,,????'?????<???????????????????????(R)?EUR??,,????'????s airports.
The controversy highlights the challenges involved in balancing the desire of developers to install water features (Which of course provide much needed work for landscape professionals.) and public safety.
