Water Deep to Combat Droughts

A deep watering program is designed to improve soil moisture around trees and shrubs. According to a North American tree care company, several factors are used to determine the right amount of water to use including tree species, whether or not the tree is deciduous or evergreen, time of year and soil density.

It appears that for a large portion of the western U.S., drought conditions are in no hurry to depart. Landscape professionals in those areas are taking various steps to mitigate the effects on their customers' turf, plants and trees.

According to one tree care company, an effective strategy to employ is deep watering. This entails the use of a special probe and high pressure to inject water directly into the root zones of trees and shrubs, which allows them to maximize the use of the water and lessens the risk of evaporation or runoff.

Davey Tree, a company made up of employee-owners that include ISA certified arborists in their ranks, and services clients throughout North America, has released advice on their technique and the way they determine sufficient amounts of water to apply.

Among the factors are the tree's species; whether or not it is deciduous or evergreen; the compatibility of species growing nearby; the efficiency of the current irrigation system; the time of year; and soil density.
