English architect and landscape architect Calvert Vaux designed homes, the American Museum of Natural History, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and collaborated with Frederick Law Olmsted on the design of Central Park, Morningside Park in Manhattan, and Prospect Park and Fort Greene Park in Brooklyn, among others.
On Nov. 20, 1895, the 70-year old Vaux, recently ailing, though still working for the New York Parks Department, took a walk. The next day Vaux?EUR??,,????'?????<????????????EUR??,,??s diminutive body (four feet 10 inches) was discovered off Bath Beach in the waters of Gravesend Bay, Brooklyn, N.Y.
The police classified his death a suicide. His son believed it an accident. Nine years later Vaux?EUR??,,????'?????<????????????EUR??,,??s daughter, Helen, hung herself.
