Town Square Park in Murrieta, Calif. is now home to a granite obelisk with an inlaid granite American flag set in a base honoring the five U.S. services: Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force and Coast Guard. The obelisk stands above a series of walls depicting dramatic imagery of the men and women who served their country in time of war. The plan is for seven granite monuments to represent a chronology of U.S. conflicts: Revolutionary War; War of 1812; Civil War; WWI; WWII; Korea; Vietnam; Desert Storm; Iraqi; Afghanistan; and a special tribute to MIAs and POWs. Phase I, consisting of an obelisk and World War II memorial walls, is now complete. Additions to the memorial will come as funds become available. Decomposed granite at the base of the memorial walls becomes a winding path through the ?EUR??,,????'??V?EUR??,,????'?? pattern of Town Square Park. Each wall can be viewed from both pathways, but is also set to interrupt the decomposed granite path that links the monument walls. This interruption symbolizes the struggles and the abrupt disruptions in life engendered by war. The heights and shapes of the walls, represented by their incline and buried portions, symbolize the emotional highs and lows experienced by soldiers at war. Nate Mullen Visual Concepts, LLC designed the lighting for the main obelisk and the WWII Monument Wall. The landscape architect was David Neault Associates, Inc. |
