Waller Creek Design Competition Down to Four Teams

Waller Creek begins north of the University of Texas at Austin campus and meanders throughout downtown, ultimately connected with Lady Bird Lake. The focus of design and revitalization is from 15th Street to Lady Bird Lake. Not all the route is scenic.

The Waller Creek Conservancy jury panel announced April 16, 2012 the four team-finalists for the Waller Creek design competition (https://www.wallercreek.org):

• San Francisco-based landscape architectural firm CMG, and Public Architecture, a nonprofit.

• New York-based landscape architectural firm Michael Van Valkenburgh Associates, and Thomas Phifer and Partners.

• San Antonio-based Lake | Flato Architects, and Turenscape, a Chinese design company.

• Ten Eyck Landscape Architects (offices in Austin and Phoenix); New York-based Workshop: Ken Smith Landscape Architect; and Rogers Marvel Architects.

The conservancy seeks a conceptual plan to:

1. Create a healthy ecosystem for the creek and surrounding areas, and rehabilitate two city parks and other open spaces.

2. Bridge two areas of Austin now divided by the interstate.

3. Create a destination attraction.
