Walker Playground and Norfolk Park, Boston, MA

Copley Wolff Design Group
by Staff

Through a public workshop and online survey, Copley Wolff Design Group engaged the Mattapan community in redesigning the playground to best fulfill their needs and preferences. Based on client and community feedback, Copley Wolff designed a universally accessible site with strong pedestrian connections to adjacencies; a walking loop around an athletic field; and a revitalized playground with new structures, surfacing, and water play features.
The low-impact drainage approach was developed in collaboration between landscape architects at Copley Wolff, a civil engineer, and an expert field designer. All existing trees around the site are slated to be saved, a significant shade structure will be repaired, and the natural rock outcrops and historic Roxbury Puddingstone foundation walls have been seamlessly incorporated into the design.

As the prime consultant, Copley Wolff Design Group led the project through the Design Development process, which included three concept alternatives and the production of Construction Documents based on the preferred scheme.

The upcoming Parks Issue of Landscape Architect and Specifier News saw many firms submit their projects for feature consideration. This project was not chosen for a Feature in the issue, but we at LandscapeArchitect.com thought the project deserved to be showcased online . . .
