Among the colorful plants for Sunset's "2014 Idea Home" is (from top): ???Kaleidoscope' Abelia, ???Orange Rocket' Berberis, ???Pineapple Popsicle' Kniphofia and ???Hot Pink Riding Hood' Penstemon. The landscape's drought-tolerant plants are from the Sunset Western Garden Collection. All the plants, $5,000 worth, were donated by Village Nurseries in Orange, Calif., the exclusive grower of the Sunset Western Garden Collection to the landscape trade.

Each year, Sunset collaborates with a builder, interior designer (or design team), architect and landscape architect (or landscape designer) to create a show home??"an "Idea House" that "displays the latest innovations in Western home design.

This year's Sunset Idea House is for the first time in Los Angeles. It is a 4,600-square-foot home on a 50 by 200-foot lot in Manhattan Beach, Calif. The 4-bedroom/4.5-bathroom home is located just five miles from Los Angeles International Airport, and is one-and-a-half miles from the beach. The home's "coastal modern" style is accented by a lush garden and a pool.

Visitors to the Manhattan Beach home will get tips on how to create a water-wise garden. The home will be open for tours from 10-5 on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays beginning August 1, 2014, and ending on September 7, 2014. Tickets will be sold online starting in July and on-site during tour hours.
