While Voltaire was speaking in metaphor, people in cities across the U.S. are literally doing just that?EUR??,,????'?????<????????????????????cultivating their gardens ?EUR??,,????'?????<??????????????????????(R)???????+? for food. Victory gardens, de rigueur during WWII, are truly making a comeback. It seems the soaring gas prices and concomitant rise of just about every food item in the markets these days, is getting people more interested (motivated) in growing some of their own veggies.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture predicts food prices will rise another 4.5 percent to 5.5 percent this year. San Francisco has a pilot project funded by the city called Victory Gardens 2008+ [www.sfvictorygardens.org] to ?EUR??,,????'?????<?????????????????support the transition of backyard, front yard, window boxes, rooftops and unused land into organic food production areas.?EUR??,,????'?????<?????????????????
Collaborating with Victory Gardens 2008+ is a group called Slow Food Nation, which will create an ?EUR??,,????'?????<?????????????????ornamental edible garden in the heart of San Francisco?EUR??,,????'?????<???????????????????????(R)?EUR??,,????'????s Civic Center,?EUR??,,????'?????<????????????????? the same site as another victory garden 60 years ago. The Slow Food Nation Victory Garden aims to demonstrate the ?EUR??,,????'?????<?????????????????potential of a truly local agriculture practice,?EUR??,,????'?????<????????????????? while producing high quality food for those in need.
