The Parks Issue of Landscape Architect & Specifier News saw many firms submit their projects for feature consideration. This project was not chosen for a Feature in the issue, but we at LandscapeArchitect.com thought the project deserved to be showcased online . . .
Veterans Gardens at Pacific Palisades Park, brought to life by Your Palisades Park Improvement Corporation, embodies the community's vision for a versatile, inclusive space. Jimmy Dunne, a key member of the non-profit, had long taught bocce ball at a private beach club and believed it was time to introduce public bocce courts for all to enjoy. Bocce was chosen for its universal appeal, offering an activity accessible to people of all ages and abilities.
The park's design, led by Pamela Burton & Company, features three bocce courts, picnic areas, open play lawns, and a walking path for guests to explore the gardens and view memorial plaques honoring the armed forces. A significant donation from the local American Legion branch allowed for the park to be named Veterans Gardens, with dedicated "Garden Living Rooms" commemorating each military branch.
Today, the bocce courts host an array of community leagues, from Grandparents/Grandkids to the "Bocce Brunch Bunch" for seniors, fostering a true sense of connection among residents. Veterans Gardens stands as a tribute to those who served and a thriving hub for multi-generational recreation, uniting the community in both play and reflection.
Initiated by a non-profit community group called Your Palisades Park Improvement Corporation, Pamela Burton & Company collaborated with City of Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks to meet their standards, details and specifications for this special space at Pacific Palisades Park. Benches and picnic tables provide park goers with opportunities to eat, play board games, visit with friends or watch a bocce game.
Editor's Note: This project was submitted in November 2024. Veterans Gardens at Pacific Palisades Park was unfortunately affected by the January 2025 Palisades Fire and is closed until further notice.
