The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs has fired Edge Construction Co. of Southfield, Mich., contracted to build the Great Lakes National Cemetery near Holly, Mich., 45 miles northwest of Detroit. Chronic delays and quality control problems were cited by Ray Kempisty, spokesman for the National Cemetery Administration in Washington, D.C.

The official groundbreaking ceremony for the cemetery was Oct. 14, 2004 and the cost for construction budget at $8.6 million. The work was to be completed by May 18, 2005, so that burials could start by Memorial Day. The contracting company cited bad weather for the overrun and were granted an extension to July 18. When that deadline passed, the company was fined $787 a day and given until Sept. 1 to finish.

Another contractor will be hired with the goal for completing the cemetery by mid-October 2005.

The Detroit Press noted the Sharp Funeral Home in nearby Fenton now holds 70 bodies destined for the cemetery.
