Verdant Custom Outdoors is a custom design-build pool and landscape construction firm. Under the umbrella of Lowry Companies Incorporated, they have been installing custom residential landscapes in San Diego County for over twenty years. The firm is managed and directed by President Keith Lowry, a licensed pool, landscape and general contractor in the state of California.
A member of the California Landscape Contractors Association (CLCA), American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA), and the Association of Pool and Spa Professionals (APSP) to name a few, they approach landscape construction with an enthusiasm for things well made and long lasting.
The Pattengill Residence, located in Kensington?EUR??,,????'?????<???(R)a suburb of San Diego, Calif., was completed in December of 2006. Construction involved two phases, including a front courtyard, which was completed first, followed by the pool and garden area at the rear of the house. The owners, who were artists by profession, were involved in every step of the project. They took this further than most homeowners and were involved in building pieces of the project as well. They tried their hand at glass mosaics and created a custom mosaic medallion that we installed in the center of the front entry courtyard.
The rear garden included a pool and spa, with red concrete installed on the hardscape areas. In addition, orange Venetian plaster was also used along with cobalt blue pool tile.
?EUR??,,????'?????<?Start to finish the project took 6 months to complete,?EUR??,,????'?????<? said Lowry. About 3 months was spent on the pool, while a month and a half was spent on both the hardscape and softscape respectively.
The lot was narrow and small. The back yard originally had a basic lawn and dated plantings. In order to fit the spa and pool while still having space for an entertainment area, Verdant located the pool directly abutting the existing detached garage with a new stone-veneered wall as a backdrop.
?EUR??,,????'?????<?It?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s a very small backyard. We had some challenges with material access. The biggest challenge was in original design. It was difficult to fit all pieces from original design in backyard.?EUR??,,????'?????<?
The crew also had a special engineering challenges in constructing the pool, as it was directly adjacent to the garage.
?EUR??,,????'?????<?The dig actually had a 7 ft vertical drop from wall of garage to pool straight down,?EUR??,,????'?????<? said Lowry. ?EUR??,,????'?????<?Also, Since the buildings were older, the foundation wasn?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?t up to current code requirements and we had to be careful not to have a collapse during excavation and construction.?EUR??,,????'?????<?
The clients were concerned about privacy from a second story addition being built next door, so three types of bamboo were used to screen the pool area.
?EUR??,,????'?????<?The lots were small. In order to fit the pool we had to be very precise with our excavation. We couldn?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?t give up literally and inch,?EUR??,,????'?????<? said Lowry. ?EUR??,,????'?????<?We were able to get everything we needed in backyard, though.?EUR??,,????'?????<? ?EUR??,,????'?????<?We used a Bobcat to dig. The lot was just wide enough to get the bobcat in.?EUR??,,????'?????<?
?EUR??,,????'?????<?Once we got into the backyard, the configuration of existing home and backyard was very tight. Once we dug the pool, there wasn?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?t much room to maneuver between pool and house,?EUR??,,????'?????<? said Lowry. In addition to the Bobcats, ?EUR??,,????'?????<?we also used a dingo, (a small track excavator). Other than that, we used all of your other standard construction tools like shovels, wheelbarrows, a jackhammer, etc.?EUR??,,????'?????<?
About 70 cubic yards of dirt were removed in excavating the pool.
?EUR??,,????'?????<?It was a very slow dig. We excavated the pool, transported excess materials to street. The process involved slowly digging portions of pool, while another bobcat and dingo would grab those spoils and move them to the front yard. We stockpiled all the spoils in the street. Then we called in an End Dump when we were finished.?EUR??,,????'?????<?
Completed in December of 2006, the total project size was just over 1500 square ft. The total budget for the project was about $160 thousand, with $115 thousand going towards the pool and another $44 thousand for the landscape/hardscacpe.
Plants for this project were selected primarily for their unique foliage color in order to hold their own against the colors used in the hardscape. Black Ginger, ?EUR??,,????'?????<?Fireball?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR? bromilead, and a variety of cordylines all add to this effect. Chocolate Chip Ajuga were also between the concrete pads that make up the driveway, a color that compliments the burgundy/red in the paving.
Company President Keith Lowry has worked in the landscape industry since 1984. He established the Lowry Company in the fall of 1987, which later evolved into Verdant Custom Outdoors. Keith?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s daily focus is on supervising projects in design development and under construction. He is a licensed swimming pool, landscape and general contractor.
Kate Wiseman, the in-house Landscape Designer, has been with Verdant for five years. She has a Bachelor?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s degree in Botany from the University of California at Berkley and a Masters in Landscape Architecture from Cal Poly Pomona?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s school of Environmental Design. Kate is currently a candidate for licensure as a Landscape Architect in California.
The company employs a crew of 15. ?EUR??,,????'?????<?We?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?re pool builders and landscape contractors,?EUR??,,????'?????<? said Lowry. ?EUR??,,????'?????<?We have a number of standard crews we work with. ?EUR??,,????'?????<?We only sub to specialty trades related to pool construction like electrical, and plaster. We do our own excavations, forming of pools concrete, masonry, tile and coping.?EUR??,,????'?????<?
?EUR??,,????'?????<?Our niche market is one stop shopping for anything outside of the house,?EUR??,,????'?????<? he went on. ?EUR??,,????'?????<?Everything from planning to development; basically, every component that relates to an outdoor project.?EUR??,,????'?????<?
The company started in landscape maintenance, but now only work in high-end custom residential. ?EUR??,,????'?????<?We no longer do maintenance,?EUR??,,????'?????<? said Lowry. ?EUR??,,????'?????<?Sometimes I wish I hadn?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?t sold that division, especially in times like these, but we are busy. We have a heavy workload to start the new year.?EUR??,,????'?????<?
?EUR??,,????'?????<?We are wrapping up all our big projects at the moment. We?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?re doing mostly warranty work at this time of year, such as general repairs and follow up. We start the new year with a number of new projects.?EUR??,,????'?????<?
