The utility launched its new ''Agua Savio'' training program to help landscapers meet growing customer demand for low-water-use systems, said Katherine Yuhas, the Authority's water conservation officer, in a news release.
''Through this training, we are giving contractors the tools they need to determine a landscape's water needs, reduce water use, take advantage of rebates and much more,'' Yuhas said. ''For the customer, knowing that the contractor selected is specifically trained in irrigation efficiency for our area and climate assures they are working with a firm that is up to date on the most efficient ways to manage their existing landscape's water needs, make changes or install new, water-saving landscapes.''
Two-hour courses on a variety of topics are free for all landscape contractors. Classes are conducted in English and Spanish, and contractors can either schedule classes at their facility or attend already-scheduled courses. Participants will receive a certificate after completing the class that shows they have been trained in irrigation efficiency, Yuhas said.
Course topics include Albuquerque weather patterns, how to determine a landscape's water needs, ways to reduce landscape irrigation, different types of irrigation systems, how to detect and repair irrigation system leaks, and methods for using plants, trees, mulch and other yard features to improve landscapes and save water.
