USGBC Ranks Top States for LEED

Green Building Certifications and Professionals

The Top 10 States for LEED Green Building is based on gross sq. ft. of certified space per person using 2010 U.S. Census data and includes commercial and institutional projects certified in 2020.

In an annual list of the Top 10 States for LEED Green Building released by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC), more than 60% of certifications in 2020 were office, healthcare, higher education and K-12 projects. Out of 1,171 certified LEED buildings and spaces, Massachusetts is at the top of list with the most certified sq. ft. per capita. According to the USGBC, almost half of all certified projects in 2020 were rated Gold, the second highest LEED rating level behind Platinum.


Also released was the Top 10 States for LEED Professionals in 2020 with California and New York having the highest number of LEED professionals out of a ranking of more than 100,000 green building workers in the country.
