The U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) has announced that it will award $15 million in grants to two new national University Transportation Centers (UTCs) in order to advance research and education programs that address critical transportation challenges facing the country. The new UTCs are based at the University of South Florida and Washington State University.

USDOT received competitive grant applications from 51 universities each advocating for the opportunity to be one of the two new national UTCs. The University of South Florida's focus will be "Congestion Relief" and Washington State University will focus on "Improving the Durability and Extending the Life of Transportation Infrastructure." The funding for these two additional UTCs was reserved for the program in the Consolidated Appropriations Act, 2018. Each UTC will receive $7.5 million.

According to USDOT, UTCs advance U.S. technology in the many modes and disciplines of transportation and address workforce needs for transportation leaders.
