In a continued effort to bolster roadway safety, the U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) has disbursed $817 million in grants through the third round of its "Safe Streets and Roads for All" (SS4A) program. This funding comprises 48 implementation grants directed at safety-focused projects and strategies, complemented by 337 grants supporting various project planning activities.

 

The SS4A initiative, established by the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA), channels resources directly to regional, local, and tribal communities. The goal is to facilitate the development of road safety action plans and enhance roadway corridors through the implementation of effective interventions. These interventions may include testing safety features such as separated bicycle lanes and curb extensions at intersections.

The USDOT emphasizes that the SS4A program aligns with its National Roadway Safety Strategy (NRSS), introduced in January 2022. The strategy forms part of a comprehensive approach aimed at reducing roadway fatalities by improving the safety of both roads and vehicles, coupled with enhancements to post-crash care.
