In mid-January, 2008, Philadelphia-based Urban Outfitters (NASDAQ:URBN), a retailer that operates 242 stores under its namesake Urban Outfitters, Anthropologie and Free People stores, bought J. Franklin Styer Nurseries for an undisclosed price, thus entering the garden center business.

Since 1890, the name Styer has been part of the horticulture industry in the Brandywine Valley of Pennsylvania. Company founder Jacob Styer pioneered a number of plant production methods. He began with a few greenhouses but grew the company into a full-service landscape design and installation company with a highly-regarded retail garden center. Styer offers over 2,100 species and cultivars on its perennial list alone, plus a complete line of annuals, trees, shrubs and groundcovers. Styer also carries a large variety of rare and hard-to-find trees and shrubs. Specimen trees of all sizes are its specialty.

J. Franklin Styer Nurseries is located in Concordville, Pa.
