The University of Maryland, Baltimore County's (UMBC) Library Pond was originally designed in the 1960s and has functioned as a fundamental node of the pedestrian oriented campus core for decades. The pond is set in soft contrast to the 1968 Brutalist architecture of the adjoining Albin O. Kuhn Library and Gallery, a dominant and historically central campus building. Years of sediment accumulation, an incised stream outfall, and deterioration of the pond's retaining walls and weir structure called for a complete reconstruction of the pond and the opportunity to re-envision its surrounding landscape. Emphasizing the juxtaposition of the built and natural edges, the rejuvenated pond and its new promenade, walkways, and plaza spaces create a more accessible and inviting destination.
