Including a focus on resilience when designing and building communities is essential in today's world according to the Urban Land Institute. This September they will stage a conference that will explore this concept. Building the Resilient City: Risks and Opportunities, will present industry specialists who will share best practices and actionable tools to help investors, developers, planners, architects, engineers and consultants create more resilient neighborhoods. The conference sessions are slated for San Francisco on Sept. 4 and 5. Topics include: Through the Rearview Mirror: Leadership Lessons from Loma Prieta, Katrina, and Sandy, and The Human and Social Dimensions of Resilience: Bouncing Forward into Communities of Opportunity. In addition to the conference days, on Sept. 3, attendees can choose between two tours of city areas to gain more insight into the necessity of resilience and possible solutions. The Mission Creek tour will showcase the first step in a project to protect San Francisco's lowest-lying areas. The Ocean Beach tour will highlight the ongoing efforts to implement the Ocean Beach Master Plan, which presents a comprehensive vision to address sea-level rise along the city's western shoreline.
