The 615 hardworking professionals that comprise the University of Arizona's groundskeeping staff were awarded the APPA Award for Excellence for the second year in a row. Because of this honor, the university has become the first four-year school to obtain consecutive honor awards.

Formed in 1914, APPA seeks to portray a positive impact in educational facilities by adhering to three principles. Summing them up, they are as follows: transforming individual professors into higher performing leaders, transforming member institutions into more supportive learning environments and elevating the recognition and value of educational facilities. APPA used to stand for Association of Physical Plant Administrators, however this is no longer the case and now the association is simply referred to as APPA.

U. of A's assistant vice president, Christopher Kopach, is in charge of the facilities department and stated in a press conference, regarding the award, that one of the main reasons the department has such a great success is due to the college's succession plan, which enrolls students in the program and guarantees them a job as soon as they earn their degree.
