Southern Utah University, with the help of a Blue Sky grant from Rocky Mountain Power, has installed 35 solar panels on the facilities building west of campus. The solar panels are part of the university?EUR??,,????'?????<????????????EUR??,,??s green initiative.
?EUR??,,????'?????<????????We have always been conservative, but with the solar panels we are continuing the effort,?EUR??,,????'?????<???????? David Tanner associate vice president for Facilities Management said.
The panels are in addition to different landscaping initiatives using 80 different types of trees around campus, as well as drought resistant shrubs, Tanner said.
?EUR??,,????'?????<????????It?EUR??,,????'?????<????????????EUR??,,??s the holistic approach,?EUR??,,????'?????<???????? he said. ?EUR??,,????'?????<????????We are encouraging the entire campus to help be more conservative.?EUR??,,????'?????<????????
Utility services manager Tiger Funk said the $30,000 grant from Rocky Mountain Power was essential in the addition of the solar panels.
?EUR??,,????'?????<????????We have a very good relationship with Rocky Mountain Power,?EUR??,,????'?????<???????? he said. ?EUR??,,????'?????<????????The grant paid for over half of the project.?EUR??,,????'?????<????????
Depending on the way the panels work out for the university, there may be more installed in the future, Funk said.
?EUR??,,????'?????<????????We would like to see future installment,?EUR??,,????'?????<???????? he said. ?EUR??,,????'?????<????????The location is out of the way, and so we will see how it goes.?EUR??,,????'?????<????????
Facilities Management is currently working to build a new office building and it may end up being powered by either solar or wind application, Funk said.
Tanner agreed that the use of solar energy might expand across campus in the near future.
?EUR??,,????'?????<????????We hope to expand in the future especially once the systems come down in cost,?EUR??,,????'?????<???????? he said.
