Ultra Aluminum Q and A with the Experts
A Conversation with Ben Jodoin
by Ben Jodoin
Q: Where did the inspiration come from for an aluminum/vinyl "hybrid" privacy fence?
A: After having tremendous success with our all-aluminum tongue & groove privacy product, it became clear that the industry was ready for more options in privacy screening. As is the case with all product development at Ultra, inspiration ultimately came from listening to our customers. We were told that clients were looking for something more than the typical white vinyl privacy panels that have been available for decades and that even the more premium wood-grained options had too much of a monochromatic look. Since the aluminum business is known for darker colors that don't work well for vinyl, we thought that framing any of the beautifully variegated vinyl boards currently available with a contrasting aluminum frame would be the best of both worlds. Hence, the Ultra Vinyl Privacy was born!
Q: Are there any special design considerations when specifying Ultra's Vinyl Privacy panels?
A: Very few. This product comes in standard 8' widths and multiple heights, but like all privacy fencing, there are certainly limits to how tall of a fence should be built based on wind loads. For the same reason, gate sizes need to be limited although, [unlike vinyl] our aluminum gate frames are fully welded for additional strength. In short, our product should be considered interchangeable with just about any other privacy option available.
Q: What are some of the advantages of Ultra's Vinyl Privacy over the typical vinyl or wood fence?
A: As mentioned, previously, adding an aluminum frame to vinyl gives you visual contrast that you just can't get with other products. Since our customers typically provide their own vinyl boards from whatever manufacturer they deal with, the combination of our powder-coated frame along with all the different manufacturers' tongue & groove boards, allows for virtually unlimited color combinations. For that reason, I would say aesthetics is the #1 advantage over any other type of privacy. When comparing against wood in particular, another advantage is longevity since neither aluminum nor vinyl will rot over time. That, along with advancements in coatings that improve color-retention, makes this a lifetime product. Finally, our fully welded gate frames provide superior performance compared to mechanically fastened wood or vinyl.
Q: What are some of the applications that landscape designers are finding for this product?
A: Applications range from residential yards and dumpster surrounds to screens between patios on condo units and outdoor seating areas in restaurants. Anywhere area that would call for privacy screening could be greatly enhanced with this product.
Q: What's the best way for designers to familiarize themselves with this product?
A: Ultra offers consultation with one of the most experienced teams of sales and customer service people in the industry. Along with literature, technical information, samples and an online Design Studio, details can be addressed by visiting
