Combines Horticulture with Turfgrass and Soil Science 
Students in the University of Connecticut's Department of Plant Science and Landscape Architecture can now major in Sustainable Plant and Soil Systems. The new degree merges Horticulture with Turfgrass and Soil Science, acknowledging the common attributes of the fields.
Students will complete a required course set and then choose a concentration: turfgrass science, environmental horticulture, or sustainable agriculture. Turfgrass science focuses on management of golf courses, athletic fields, and residential, commercial and municipal grounds; environmental horticulture emphasizes commercial production of ornamental plants and their use in the landscape. The new major recognizes the overlap in the basic knowledge of biology, chemistry, and plant and soil sciences required for all three emphases. Students will learn how to ensure soil health, responsibly manage fertilizers, runoff and water usage, and control invasive plants and pests. Students also have the opportunity to gain real-world experience through internships, which are required for all concentrations except horticulture (though it is highly recommended).
