by Wood Rodgers, Inc.

With the nearest city park being over two miles away, Turkey Creek Park has become a neighborhood touchstone.

The Parks Issue of Landscape Architect and Specifier News saw many firms submit their projects for feature consideration. The Turkey Creek Park is one of several great projects we are excited to showcase on LandscapeArchitect.com.

Turkey Creek Park is the inaugural neighborhood park of Turkey Creek Estates, a 248-acre community located in Lincoln, California. The site's natural terrain consists of Valley and Blue Oak trees and large granite outcroppings which inspired the park's design, allowing users an opportunity to experience the site's natural beauty while enjoying context-inspired play features. The placement of granite boulders sourced on-site within plantings of drought- tolerant and California native plants ensure the park's ability to withstand summer heat while conserving water. These landscape areas utilize point source emitters, low flow spray heads and a smart irrigation controller with a weather sensor to reduce water use and promote plant health.

The park has unique play equipment, accessible site furnishings, public art, and a recreational turf area, providing a variety of high value play elements. The most memorable feature is a whimsical 'happy snake' tunnel made of terra cotta drainpipe sections, designed by local artist Ray Gonzales. The tunnel is nestled under the park's heritage oak trees to inspire fantasy play and preserve their inherent beauty. The terra cotta manufacturer, Gladding McBean, is historically nationally significant as one of only two remaining architectural terra cotta fabricators in the country and is located three miles from the park. Custom terra cotta identifiers have also been incorporated in the park stairway and as a public art installation down the street.
