Turf Grass Take Over

Industry sources within the bluegrass seed business generally welcomed Scotts’ purchase. Jack Zimmer, owner of Pineview Horticulture Service, a wholesale seed, fertilizer and chemical business in Northern Idaho, said word on the street is that Scotts needed to secure better control of its bluegrass seed supply.

Turf grass powerhouse Scotts Miracle-Gro is purchasing two independent Eastern Washington bluegrass seed companies.

Seed’s Inc. of Tekoa, Wash., and Dye Seed Ranch of Pomeroy, Wash., will become part of the turf grass giant in a deal that is expected to close in May.

Bluegrass seed is an important part of almost any grass-seed mix, and, unlike other varieties of grass seed, it doesn’t grow well outside the Eastern Washington and Northern Idaho region.

Meanwhile, perennial rye acreage has shifted outside the Northwest, with production now grown around Winnipeg, Canada, and in Minnesota and North Dakota. Tall fescue has even found a niche overseas. Bluegrass seed, however, continues to grow best in the Inland Northwest.

Scott’s said upon purchase, it intends to maintain current operations and “continue to build upon the long-term relationships with growers and customers that both companies have established over the years.”
