As you already know landscaping can be a very dangerous profession where accidents occur often. According to the 2006 Department of Labor census of occupational injuries, 169 landscaping service workers died on the job as opposed to just 24 janitors.

A landscaper was electrocuted in October while trimming a redwood near a 12,000-volt power line in Woodacre, Calif.

Carlos Rivera-Olvera, 25, was killed while working 50 feet up a tree at a private residence. A set of power lines passes within inches of the tree trunk about 50 feet from the ground, and authorities said Rivera-Olvera either touched a wire or one fell on him.

Rivera-Olvera worked for Efrain’s Landscape Construction, a state-licensed contractor in Terra Linda. His employer, Efrain Chavarria, who was present when the electrocution occurred, did not respond to a request for comment.

The incident is being investigated by the coroner’s office and the sheriff’s office. The California Division of Occupational Safety and Health, which investigates workplace deaths, is expected to open an inquiry.
