Tree Ordinance Will Keep Isle Green

Agreement on a new tree ordinance for St. Simons Island, Ga. took more than four years.

After four years of contention between the development community and a citizen tree board, the parties have finally come to a consensus on a tree ordinance for St. Simons Island. The St. Simons Planning Commission and the Glynn County Commission both need to approve the measure before the ordinance goes into effect.

The ordinance requires tree plans submitted with all site plan approvals and establishes tree protection zones. The guidelines also create a credit system for replacing removed trees.

A member of the island planning commission judged the ordinance a reasonable compromise to protect the trees and protect property rights.

The tree board was pleased the ordinance mandates preservation and replacement of trees that fall to land development, thus maintaining the isle?EUR??,,????'?????<
