American Road and Transportation Builders Association arrived at its 2010 forecast of an increase of 8 percent after considering current economic conditions, federal investments, state and local funding. There were $41 billion in federal highway obligations in 2009.

The road-construction market is expected to grow next year, according to an annual economic forecast released by the American Road and Transportation Builders Association.

Highway and bridge construction should reach $91 billion in 2010, up from $84 billion this year, said Alison Black, ARTBA's vice president of policy and economy.

Black said the boost to the market could be temporary, as there could be an unforeseen downturn next year. She said that uncertainty about surface transportation authorization and the growth of the U.S. economy could result in a decline in construction in 2010.

She added that the end of federal economic recovery funds was also a concern. However, Congress is considering a new job-creation package that could pump tens of billions of additional dollars into transportation infrastructure next year. - Courtesy of AASHTO
