The Trust for Public Land (TPL) and its campaign to save Cahuenga Peak, home of the landmark Hollywood sign, has received a million dollar grant from Tiffany & Co. Foundation. The foundation?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s urban parks program also supports New York City parks through the Battery Conservancy and Friends of the High Line, and parks in Houston, Chicago and Miami.
The grant will go toward TPL?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s purchase and conservation of Cahuenga Peak, which is part of the Santa Monica Mountains. The peak has an enviable, unobstructed, 360-degree panorama of Los Angeles and the San Fernando Valley.
The property?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s owners, a group of investors who bought the land from the Howard Hughes estate in 2002 for a mere $1,675,000, envisioned constructing luxury estates on the hill. The investors have accepted a selling price of $12.5 million.
TPL has until April 14, 2010 to come up with the $12.5 million, otherwise, the property goes back on the market.
Howard Hughes bought the peak and the surrounding acreage in the 1930s with plans to build a house for his love interest at the time, actress Ginger Rogers. Ginger apparently declined the offer, so no house up there with the best view in town. What was she thinking? That must have been an interesting conversation.
If TPL comes up with the cash for the mountain top, it will transfer the Cahuenga Peak land over to adjoining Griffith Park, thus permanently protecting the view of the Hollywood sign and keeping the native chaparral landscape intact.
