Carmela Amato, 45, leaned up against a fichus tree in the 5600 block of Heil Avenue in Huntington Beach, California, hoping the city would think twice before ripping out the massive tree that canopies the sidewalks and homes. ?EUR??,,????'?????<?Hearing the chain saw, I just started to cry,?EUR??,,????'?????<? she said. ?EUR??,,????'?????<?I thought to myself, I need to do something.?EUR??,,????'?????<? Amato jumped on her bike and cycled across the street to stand her ground in front of about 10 crew members who waited ready with their saws. Two other trees up the street had been taken down earlier this week, she said.
The city is removing the fichus tree because its roots have damaged the sewer lines, officials said. Other trees on the street have lifted the sidewalk and some residents say the thick roots are creeping toward the homes. The police were called after about 30 minutes and Amato was threatened with arrest if she did not leave, she said.
?EUR??,,????'?????<?They were really nice about it but they told me I was obstructing justice and would be taken to jail,?EUR??,,????'?????<? she said. Amato said she would not return to guard the trees any time soon because she fears she would be arrested. However, at the suggestion of the police, she is going to try and file an injunction to stop the city?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s work.
City spokeswoman Laurie Payne said the tree will be replaced but the city is not yet sure what they will plant. Payne said the fichus are only removed if it is necessary. In this case, a resident had called and complained that her sewer lines were backed up.
After investigation with an underground camera, the city found the fichus tree to be the root of the problem. ?EUR??,,????'?????<?Our ultimate goal is to try and fix the line without taking down the tree,?EUR??,,????'?????<? Payne said. ?EUR??,,????'?????<?We only do it on an as-needed basis.?EUR??,,????'?????<?
Payne added that the other nearly dozen fichus trees on Heil are not slated to be chopped down. Resident Gary Laffen, who lives on the street, said the trees have been a trademark in his neighborhood, but he understands why some are being taken out.
?EUR??,,????'?????<?I?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?ve lived here since 1990 and one of the things I?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?ve loved about living here are these trees,?EUR??,,????'?????<? he said. ?EUR??,,????'?????<?The bottom line is it?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s sad but they have to plant something else. These are affecting the mains.?EUR??,,????'?????<?
Laffen watched from his front lawn as Amato tried to persuade city crews to halt their work.
?EUR??,,????'?????<?She obviously has a great passion for this,?EUR??,,????'?????<? he said. ?EUR??,,????'?????<?She was out there crying by herself and after they made the first cut she just sat there rubbing the tree, almost coddling it.?EUR??,,????'?????<? Amato said she hoped her demonstration signaled to people, if even on a small scale, the importance of taking care of the environment. ?EUR??,,????'?????<?We take and take but we give nothing back,?EUR??,,????'?????<? she said. ?EUR??,,????'?????<?There are ways we can co-exist with our world.?EUR??,,????'?????<?
