Total Nonresidential Construction Spending

2024 Yearbook / 2025 Forecast
by Aaron Schmok, LASN

The Dodge Momentum Index (DMI) - a leading indicator of nonresidential construction activity - fell 4.2% in September to 208.6, driven by a 7.8% decline in commercial planning despite a 5.2% rise in institutional planning. Commercial slowdowns were noted in warehouse, office, and store projects, though hotel activity continued steady growth. Data centers remained dominant, but showed moderated growth. Institutional gains were led by education, healthcare, and recreational projects. Despite the monthly decline, the DMI remains robust, 21% higher than a year ago.
