Waterfront Toronto, an initiative of the Canadian government, Ontario Province and the city of Toronto, officially opened the Simcoe WaveDeck on June 12, 2009. The new wavy wood deck is located just west of Simcoe Street at the edge of Lake Ontario.
The Simcoe WaveDeck was built in less than eight months. The Spadina WaveDeck opened last year along the Toronto shoreline.
Construction of the third wavedeck at Rees Street is well underway and will open in August.
The WaveDeck is inspired by the cottages along the lake.
?EUR??,,????'?????<?The federal government is pleased to have contributed all of the construction costs, in the amount of more than $5 million to make this project a reality. Our government will continue to contribute to innovative infrastructure projects such as the Simcoe WaveDeck, underlining our commitment to the renewal of Toronto?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s waterfront,?EUR??,,????'?????<? explained Jim Flaherty, federal finance minister. The wavy decks are just one part of the new Toronto waterfront. The plan also includes a continuous water?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s edge promenade and boardwalk; a series of pedestrian footbridges connecting major attractions on the waterfront, and the transformation of Queens Quay into a pedestrian-friendly boulevard.
The revitalization of Toronto?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s waterfront includes the creation of more than 300 hectares (740 acres) of new and improved parks and public spaces, the equivalent of 575 football fields.
?EUR??,,????'?????<?Construction projects are underway all along the waterfront as we work to create one of the most beautiful and sustainable waterfronts in the world,?EUR??,,????'?????<? enthused Mark Wilson, chairman of Waterfront Toronto.
Construction activities include dockwall repairs, in-water fisheries habitat and landscape improvements. Planning for the first of five pedestrian footbridges along the waterfront is also underway. Also, after a two-year environmental assessment, Waterfront Toronto will present its recommendation for revitalizing Queens Quay Blvd. to the city council for approval in July, followed by approval of the minister of the environment this fall. The plan for Queens Quay is a grand lakefront boulevard with two lanes of traffic on the north side of the street, streetcars in the middle, and a new tree-lined park along the south side of the street, with space for a trail for pedestrians and cyclists.
West 8, in a joint venture with DTAH, won the Toronto Central Waterfront Innovative Design competition for a continuous, publicly accessible waterfront plan. West 8 is an international office for urban design and landscape architecture founded by Adriaan Geuze in 1987.
