TORONTO, Aug. 13?EUR??,,????'??+The Harbourfront Centre and the Toronto Waterfront Revitalization Corporation (TWRC) today announced a project marking the beginning of the complete reconstruction of the public water's edge areas on York Quay and John Quay on the Harbourfront Centre site in the central waterfront. One of the most visited sites in Toronto, with more than three million visitors each year, the Harbourfront Centre Water's Edge Revitalization Project's main focus is to expand and improve public access to Lake Ontario. John Campbell, President and CEO of the TWRC, announced that the Corporation intends to contribute $12.5 million to support Harbourfront Centre in this first step toward the overall revitalization of Harbourfront Centre. This project will include a total restructuring of the water's edge around the two quays, featuring extensive landscaping improvements, the widening of the water's edge promenades to 12 metres, the addition of a five-metre wide wooden boardwalk on the lake adjacent to the promenade, the construction of floating finger piers?EUR??,,????'??+deploying boats and creating unobstructed views of the lake?EUR??,,????'??+the installation of new and unique lighting systems and street furnishings,including a continuous granite capstone for seating that will run the length of the boardwalk. Construction is expected to begin on the York Quay waterfront in September 2003 and is expected to be completed in May 2004. Similar plans are expected to be implemented for the John Quay area next year. The Toronto Waterfront Revitalization Corporation was established in December of 2001 by the Government of Canada, the Province of Ontario and the City of Toronto to lead the revitalization of Toronto's waterfront.
