The Playgrounds Issue of Landscape Architect and Specifier News saw many firms submit their projects for feature consideration. Among several great projects, we at LandscapeArchitect.com thought these three parks deserved to be showcased online.
Breckinridge Park - Richardson, Texas
The playground at Breckinridge Park in Richardson, Texas, is a family favorite, known for its modern design and ample space. Nestled in the largest park in the city, the playground offers a range of activities that cater to children of all ages and abilities. With multiple play structures, the area includes everything from climbing walls and slides to swing sets and imaginative play elements. The inclusive design ensures accessibility, with ramps and specialized equipment that welcome children with different abilities.
A nearby shaded pavilion provides a comfortable space for parents and caregivers to relax while keeping an eye on their kids. The playground's layout encourages both active play and social interaction, with benches and picnic tables conveniently located around the perimeter. Soft, rubberized surfacing covers the ground, enhancing safety and reducing impact from falls.
In addition to the playground, Breckinridge Park features scenic trails, fishing ponds, and sports fields, making it an ideal location for a full day of outdoor fun. The park's natural surroundings, including mature trees and wide-open green spaces, add to the peaceful environment, making the Breckinridge Park playground a popular and well-loved spot for the Richardson community.
Joe Perry Sports Complex - Plano, TexasThe playground at the Joe Perry Sports Complex in Plano, Texas, is a well-designed, family-friendly spot, ideal for children of all ages. Located within this vibrant sports facility, the playground offers a range of modern play equipment that promotes physical activity, imagination, and social interaction. Kids can explore climbing structures, slides, swings, and creative play panels that encourage problem-solving and teamwork.
The playground features a spacious layout with soft, rubberized surfacing for added safety, giving parents peace of mind as children play actively. Shaded areas and benches nearby offer convenient seating for caregivers to relax and supervise comfortably. The complex's accessibility features ensure that kids of all abilities can enjoy the playground, creating an inclusive environment for everyone.
Surrounded by the sports fields and open green spaces of the Joe Perry Sports Complex, the playground makes an excellent addition to family outings, especially for siblings who may be there for sports events. With ample parking and easy access to the playground and nearby facilities, this spot has become a favorite for Plano families looking for a fun, safe, and engaging outdoor experience. The playground's vibrant design and versatile amenities ensure memorable visits for children and parents alike.
Galaxy Park - Fort Worth, TexasGalaxy Park at the Fort Worth Museum of Science and History is a unique playground born from the collaborative efforts of museum leaders, Whirlix Design, Open Space Texas, and Valley Quest Design. Launched in November 2022, this playground transformed a 20-year-old water area into a cosmic-inspired playspace that seamlessly blends fun with educational elements.
The project began in 2021 when David Rushing from Whirlix Design and Quincy Crow from Open Space Texas explored the site's potential. The vision was clear: to create a captivating and durable playground, merging science and play to engage visitors of all ages. Key design features include a custom shade structure to combat Texas heat, planetary orbits in the surfacing, and space-themed climbing structures like the Mobius® Climber and Cozy Dome®. These elements encourage interactive play while introducing astronomy and physics concepts.
The transformation was a true team effort, overcoming challenges like limited site access and intense sun exposure. The playground's success marks only the beginning, as future expansions promise to further its impact on education and play, making Galaxy Park an enduring star attraction for young explorers.
