???????(R)???????+???????(R)??????oe?EUR??,,????'?????<???????EUR??,,????'?????<
The first important thing that happened to Joe Yamada was finding Harriet Wimmer at the very beginning of his career. The other was to have Pat Caughey as a partner and the president of the firm. ?EUR??,,????'?????<?????????????????I couldn?EUR??,,????'?????<???????????????????????(R)?EUR??,,????'????t have asked for anyone better!?EUR??,,????'?????<????????????????? he says. But the most important thing across time has been the synergy of these three talented, creative, forward thinking people whose firm is still taking the profession to the next level.
?EUR??,,????'?????<?????????????????The story really starts when we came back to California after WWII,?EUR??,,????'?????<????????????????? says Joe. ?EUR??,,????'?????<?????????????????My Dad tried to buy back the five star restaurant he?EUR??,,????'?????<???????????????????????(R)?EUR??,,????'????d owned, but the guy was doing so well with it, he didn?EUR??,,????'?????<???????????????????????(R)?EUR??,,????'????t want to sell it. He bought a little Model A Ford truck and decided to be a gardener until he found another business. I worked with him every weekend in the summer.
?EUR??,,????'?????<?????????????????I did that all the way through high school, then I went into the service and my wife went on to Berkeley. She told me that they had a major called landscape architecture, and I said ?EUR??,,????'?????<?????????????????What is landscape architecture??EUR??,,????'?????<????????????????? When we were doing gardening, nurseries did most of the landscape designs.
?EUR??,,????'?????<?????????????????The first garden we designed, the owner said, ?EUR??,,????'?????<?????????????????Frank, you and your son are going to do the landscaping, so just go buy the material, too.?EUR??,,????'?????<????????????????? The first thing I realized was that we needed a map?EUR??,,????'?????<????????????????????I didn?EUR??,,????'?????<???????????????????????(R)?EUR??,,????'????t know it was called a plan?EUR??,,????'?????<????????????????????how long is the driveway, and how many plants were we going to need and where would they fit? The pet plants in those days were twisted Juniper trees on either side of the entrance with birds of paradise and Eugenia hedges and hibiscus along the lawns. When we finished, the owner thought it was spectacular.?EUR??,,????'?????<?????????????????
After Joe got out of the service he went on to study Landscape Architecture at Berkeley. ?EUR??,,????'?????<?????????????????The best thing that happened was that in our senior year we had a class where Larry Halpern, Tommy Church, Garett Eckbo, and Geraldine Scott came to work with us on our plans. They were in private practice and gave part of their time helping the students and critiquing their designs. I think of the four, Geraldine Scott, was always the most sensitive to what we were trying to create. Church was very graceful. Eckbo was very architectural. Halpern would look at your plan and improvise on it and by the time he got through, it was all red lined. It was a great plan, of course, but it was no longer yours. However, he explained everything he was doing. It was a great learning situation.?EUR??,,????'?????<?????????????????
Joe also made long lasting friendships. ?EUR??,,????'?????<?????????????????Garrett Eckbo became a very good friend of mine?EUR??,,????'?????<????????????????????in fact my son is named after him. In 1977 Garrett Eckbo sponsored me as an ASLA Fellow. We traveled to Japan together and Eckbo was like a walking god as far as the Japanese were concerned. The whole class at the university turned out to hear Eckbo give a talk on the campus?EUR??,,????'?????<????????????????????and rightly so. He was that magnificent.
?EUR??,,????'?????<?????????????????One of the most wonderful things was finding Harriet Wimmer. In 1954 when I graduated, Bob Moser of Moser & Drew suggested I go over and see her. She did all their landscape designs. There were only four landscape architects in San Diego at that time. She was going to hire me at two dollars an hour. I brought in some of my designs and she said, ?EUR??,,????'?????<?????????????????I?EUR??,,????'?????<???????????????????????(R)?EUR??,,????'????ll tell you what Joe, I?EUR??,,????'?????<???????????????????????(R)?EUR??,,????'????ve never had a person work for me. So why don?EUR??,,????'?????<???????????????????????(R)?EUR??,,????'????t we try it out for two weeks and see what happens??EUR??,,????'?????<???????????????????????(R)?EUR??,,????'???? So here it is, twenty eight years later and I?EUR??,,????'?????<???????????????????????(R)?EUR??,,????'????m still here.?EUR??,,????'?????<?????????????????
?EUR??,,????'?????<?????????????????Things have changed in the last 30 years. People have a whole new vocabulary. The plant palettes have changed, water conservation and sustainability and doing the correct things for the land have changed things considerably.?EUR??,,????'?????<?????????????????
Joe was the single draughtsman, and also Harriet?EUR??,,????'?????<???????????????????????(R)?EUR??,,????'????s chauffeur. He went everywhere with her and met all the architects as well as the owners. She had a masters from Stanford and her landscape architecture degree from Oregon. ?EUR??,,????'?????<?????????????????My area of responsibility at that time was designing all the architectural hardscaping elements?EUR??,,????'?????<????????????????????pools decks, retaining walls, waterfalls, structural things. Harriet picked all the plants. She always had the right kinds of plants to complement the architectural elements and was great at composition.
?EUR??,,????'?????<?????????????????She did softscapes and I did hardscapes. As a result I was never strong on the plant materials,?EUR??,,????'?????<????????????????? says Joe. ?EUR??,,????'?????<?????????????????But Pat?EUR??,,????'?????<??????????????????????(R)???????+?this guy, you can bring a twig in here and he knows what it is?EUR??,,????'?????<????????????????????that?EUR??,,????'?????<???????????????????????(R)?EUR??,,????'????s a Brazilian pepper, or a magnolia, a Ficus Benjamina. There isn?EUR??,,????'?????<???????????????????????(R)?EUR??,,????'????t a plant that Pat wouldn?EUR??,,????'?????<???????????????????????(R)?EUR??,,????'????t know.?EUR??,,????'?????<?????????????????
?EUR??,,????'?????<?????????????????It?EUR??,,????'?????<???????????????????????(R)?EUR??,,????'????s also changed in the last 30 years,?EUR??,,????'?????<????????????????? adds Pat. ?EUR??,,????'?????<?????????????????People have a whole new vocabulary. The plant palettes have changed. Now with sustainability, water conservation and doing the correct plantings, things have changed considerably.?EUR??,,????'?????<????????????????? Then he laughs, ?EUR??,,????'?????<?????????????????There used to be a species we called Melaleuca Yamada, because Joe introduced a lot of species to San Diego. We got a great deal of recognition early on. People would see a site and say, ?EUR??,,????'?????<?????????????????That?EUR??,,????'?????<???????????????????????(R)?EUR??,,????'????s a Wimmer Yamada landscape.?EUR??,,????'?????<???????????????????????(R)?EUR??,,????'?????EUR??,,????'?????<?????????????????
Joe continues, ?EUR??,,????'?????<?????????????????Actually, the one thing I really contributed to landscape architecture back in 1964 was mounding the earth and creating all these elevation changes. This contractor and I worked together on the UCSD campus down at Scripps Oceanography. That was the very first time we created mounds. We?EUR??,,????'?????<???????????????????????(R)?EUR??,,????'????d been doing them in smaller gardens. You can create the element of distance when you look over the mound and see other plants behind it. The director at Scripps, Roger Ravell, always refers to those mounds as Yamada Mounds. That?EUR??,,????'?????<???????????????????????(R)?EUR??,,????'????s the thing that I think was an earmark of our residential work.
?EUR??,,????'?????<?????????????????One of our commercial designs that won a top award in the state was the La Jolla Village Plaza. Along with the building came a budget for the waterfall and the grading. We created an earth berm all along La Jolla Village Drive, a major thoroughfare with constant traffic. We took all the earth from the excavation and blocked both the traffic noise and the view of all those cars. Those fifteen-foot mounds look as if they were always there. That was one of our premier projects.?EUR??,,????'?????<?????????????????
?EUR??,,????'?????<?????????????????What?EUR??,,????'?????<???????????????????????(R)?EUR??,,????'????s unique about that project,?EUR??,,????'?????<????????????????? says Pat, ?EUR??,,????'?????<?????????????????was that the landscape architect was brought in before the architect was hired. Joe helped pick the architect. ?EUR??,,????'?????<?????????????????There are so many amazing stories,?EUR??,,????'?????<????????????????? says Joe. ?EUR??,,????'?????<?????????????????One of our clients wanted to bring in a huge coral tree?EUR??,,????'?????<????????????????????maybe 25 feet high. Valley Crest had them, but the highway patrol wouldn?EUR??,,????'?????<???????????????????????(R)?EUR??,,????'????t let you bring it down the freeway. I said, ?EUR??,,????'?????<?????????????????Too bad you can?EUR??,,????'?????<???????????????????????(R)?EUR??,,????'????t have it even though it would look beautiful in your garden.?EUR??,,????'?????<???????????????????????(R)?EUR??,,????'???? When the owner heard she couldn?EUR??,,????'?????<???????????????????????(R)?EUR??,,????'????t have it, of course, she wanted that tree even more. She said she?EUR??,,????'?????<???????????????????????(R)?EUR??,,????'????d pay any fines, so Valley Crest took a chance. They were stopped by the highway patrol again and again and given a $2500 ticket each time. By the time they got to Rancho Santa Fe, they?EUR??,,????'?????<???????????????????????(R)?EUR??,,????'????d gotten something like $13,500 of fines. We moved a lot of big trees when we did Sea World, too. If somebody wants something badly enough, they?EUR??,,????'?????<???????????????????????(R)?EUR??,,????'????ll get it.?EUR??,,????'?????<?????????????????
?EUR??,,????'?????<?????????????????We don?EUR??,,????'?????<???????????????????????(R)?EUR??,,????'????t as many residential projects now as Joe and Harriet did,?EUR??,,????'?????<????????????????? says Pat. ?EUR??,,????'?????<?????????????????Most of the work now is commercial or institutional. Every now and then we get to work on a residence. It?EUR??,,????'?????<???????????????????????(R)?EUR??,,????'????s a very good tool for young designers. They learn how to work at that smaller scale and also work with clients who are usually much more particular. There are lots of differences of opinion and emotion. We spend a lot of time learning how to design, but there?EUR??,,????'?????<???????????????????????(R)?EUR??,,????'????s not a lot of time to learn how to communicate with a client.
?EUR??,,????'?????<?????????????????It?EUR??,,????'?????<???????????????????????(R)?EUR??,,????'????s easier for Pat,?EUR??,,????'?????<????????????????? says Joe. ?EUR??,,????'?????<?????????????????He can sketch the design out as he?EUR??,,????'?????<???????????????????????(R)?EUR??,,????'????s talking.?EUR??,,????'?????<?????????????????
?EUR??,,????'?????<?????????????????If you can build the image in your mind and communicate that?EUR??,,????'?????<????????????????????and that?EUR??,,????'?????<???????????????????????(R)?EUR??,,????'????s what distinguishes an artist from a technician because the artist can envision what he or she is doing?EUR??,,????'?????<????????????????????you?EUR??,,????'?????<???????????????????????(R)?EUR??,,????'????re taking what?EUR??,,????'?????<???????????????????????(R)?EUR??,,????'????s in your head and putting it on the computer,?EUR??,,????'?????<????????????????? says Pat.
The one criticism Joe has is that people coming out of school can?EUR??,,????'?????<???????????????????????(R)?EUR??,,????'????t draw. ?EUR??,,????'?????<?????????????????I myself can?EUR??,,????'?????<???????????????????????(R)?EUR??,,????'????t draw. My life with the firm was more as a public relations guy. I took clients to all these great places, the race track, the country club and clients love that. But having people see what you can do is best.?EUR??,,????'?????<?????????????????
?EUR??,,????'?????<?????????????????Actually,?EUR??,,????'?????<????????????????? continues Joe, ?EUR??,,????'?????<?????????????????Sea World came because we had done a hotel near the Sea World site, and the guys from the company used to stay there. They really liked the hotel landscaping so they found out our name and gave us a call. ?EUR??,,????'?????<?????????????????Harriet and I went to meet with the owner. He wanted Sea World to not only be known for its aquatic life, he wanted it to also be an education on plant materials. He wanted every plant brought in?EUR??,,????'?????<????????????????????every unusual plant you could find and given it?EUR??,,????'?????<???????????????????????(R)?EUR??,,????'????s a proper name with an identification sign. When school kids come through to look at the fish, they also got an education in lots a plants that you might never get to see, or see in other places. And that?EUR??,,????'?????<???????????????????????(R)?EUR??,,????'????s how we got UCSD, because they saw Sea World.?EUR??,,????'?????<?????????????????
The firm has won 75 awards, but Pat mentioned that actually it?EUR??,,????'?????<???????????????????????(R)?EUR??,,????'????s slightly more since they just won a few additional awards in the last week. Says Joe ?EUR??,,????'?????<?????????????????We also received a Merit award for Sea World and an Honor Award for the super block in El Cajon. The interesting part is that when we did the police station for El Cajon, they liked it so much the head of the city council said he wanted us to do everything else.?EUR??,,????'?????<?????????????????
Pat adds, ?EUR??,,????'?????<?????????????????Guess what? Now we?EUR??,,????'?????<???????????????????????(R)?EUR??,,????'????re back doing the new police station and the Olympic Training stadium too.?EUR??,,????'?????<?????????????????
?EUR??,,????'?????<?????????????????The market, of course, has changed,?EUR??,,????'?????<????????????????? says Pat. ?EUR??,,????'?????<?????????????????But we also don?EUR??,,????'?????<???????????????????????(R)?EUR??,,????'????t have to stay local anymore. We just finished a beautiful hospital Campus in Salt Lake City?EUR??,,????'?????<????????????????????a 150-acre, mega facility with five or six buildings. The market has opened up for the firm. The profession is also becoming much more global.?EUR??,,????'?????<?????????????????
?EUR??,,????'?????<?????????????????We all have to work together and share information,?EUR??,,????'?????<????????????????? says Joe. ?EUR??,,????'?????<?????????????????Graduate students from other countries are being sent here to take graduate classes. But then they go back. We are still the source, but in 20 years, they?EUR??,,????'?????<???????????????????????(R)?EUR??,,????'????ll have their own ideas, plans and influence.?EUR??,,????'?????<?????????????????
And if they work together as well as Harriet Wimmer, Joe Yamada and Pat Caughey have, the world will be a beautiful work of art.
