The Society of Architectural Historians will present a three-day study tour August 7-9, 2009 to celebrate the 100-year anniversary of Daniel Burnham?EUR??,,????'?????<????????????EUR??,,??s 1909 plan of Chicago. ?EUR??,,????'?????<????????The Legacy of Daniel Burnham: Architect and City Planner?EUR??,,????'?????<???????? tour coincides with the ASLA Show in Chicago and the display of the temporary Burnham Plan pavilions in Millennium Park, designed by Zaha Hadid and Ben van Berkel of UN Studio.
The tour will include an evening stroll through Millennium Park to see the pavilions and explore the park.
Tour participants will have the opportunity to briefly preview Judith Paine McBrien?EUR??,,????'?????<????????????EUR??,,??s documentary on Burnham, ?EUR??,,????'?????<????????Make No Little Plans,?EUR??,,????'?????<???????? with discussion about the making of the film with McBrien herself, prior to its public premiere at the Pritzker Pavilion and its national television airing on PBS.
Participants will learn about Burnham?EUR??,,????'?????<????????????EUR??,,??s architectural practice, philosophy, and influence through a close-up examination of buildings designed by his firm and those of his partners.
The tour will provide views of the plan, from original lantern slides shown to municipal authorities, to planned elevated perspectives over the city and the waterfront.
An afternoon guided motor coach tour, led by Dennis McClendon, will highlight aspects of the plan (as realized), including a straightened section of the Chicago River, lakefront development, outlying boulevards and woodland preserves.
A walking tour of Lincoln Park, guided by Sally Kitt Chappell, will examine noted features of the park and neighborhood, including the recently rehabilitated prairie-style Alfred Caldwell lily pool, designated a Chicago Landmark in 2002. Plans are in the works for an exclusive tour-participants-only narrated sunset architectural boat tour along the Chicago River and Lake Michigan.
