This Year's Theme: "Discover Landscape Architecture"

Ah, April??"the scents of spring, the tax deadline??"and landscape architecture month. Yes, the ASLA has proclaimed April 2006 "National Landscape Architecture Month," partnering with its chapters across the country and with the American Horticultural Society, the American Nursery & Landscape Association and the Urban Land Institute to get the word out. Each week of April is focused on a different aspect of the profession:

April 1-8: security design and community rebuilding and restoration of vegetation and wetlands to mitigate future storm damage. Laurie Olin, FASLA, who designed a security wall for the Washington Monument (see the Feb. news item or visit landscapearchitect.com), will be giving tours of the project in conjunction with the National Building Museum.

April 9-15: ASLA is partnering with the ACE Mentor Program of America to introduce high school students to careers in landscape architecture, architecture, engineering, and construction.

April 16-22: green building and sustainable design. ASLA will dedicate the green roof on its Washington, D.C. headquarters.

April 23-30: residential landscape architecture. Steve Martino, FASLA, a champion of native and low-water usage plants to achieve livable but lush landscapes, lectures at the National Building Museum.
