A recent study by Lojack Corporation stated that construction equipment theft is higher in the winter because of the decreased work activity.

To help prevent it, the National Insurance Crime Bureau has these recommendations:
  • Install hidden fuel shut-off systems.
  • Remove fuses and circuit breakers.
  • Form an equipment "wagon circle" with larger equipment surrounding smaller items.
  • Keep complete histories with photos, PINs and serial numbers.
  • Stamp or engrave (and document) equipment.

Most Popular Targets in 2014
  • Riding mowers/garden tractors – 5,051
  • Skid steers/backhoes/wheeled loaders – 1,907
  • Wheeled and tracked tractors – 1,475
  • Excavators – 343
  • Fork Lifts – 301

The NICB reports that in 2014 only 23 percent of stolen heavy equipment was recovered, which makes the use of asset tracking devices an important option to consider.
