The World's a BIG Landscape

The half-lion, half-fish sculpture in Merlion Park, Singapore is a national icon. It faces the sea on a pedestal of glass-sculpted waves and is illuminated at night.

So, you say you're not familiar with the Singapore Institute of Landscape Architects (SILA, www.sila.org.sg)? SILA, envisioned in 1983 and formed in 1985, states its objectives: "to advance the art of landscape architecture and the theory and practice of garden landscape and civic design; to promote research and education; and to create and maintain a high standard of professional qualification."

SILA reports it has been represented in various committees formed by the government to provide its expertise in the field of landscape design. The organization has 65 members and publishes a magazine, Landscape East.

The big upcoming event in these parts is Architect 2005, scheduled for May 4-8 in Muang Thong Thani, Thailand. It is the largest architectural, building and construction show in Southeast Asia.
