From The Publisher October 1998 News and Views from the Peanut Gallery . . . . A Hurricane Named Georges . . . As if you didn't already know that Georges could produce a whirlwind, my hurricane ancestor ripped through the southeast with devastating effect, not the least of which caused the cancellation of the NRPA Show in Miami. 500+ exhibitors and thousands of attendees were either stranded in the "Sunshine State," laid up at the airport or had their booths held hostage in an empty hall by the threat of hundred mile an hour winds. I personally like the NRPA show for its wide variety of park-oriented products and seminars and for the way the play structure people try to outdo each other for the most imaginative displays and new product introductions. Unfortunately, without the show we (LASN and you the readers) are going to miss it all! So, if you were an official exhibitor at NRPA, please send LASN your new product release and we'll try to publish as many as possible in the upcoming December Issue. If we can't bring you to the show we'll have to bring the show to you . . . For all of you who we usually see at the show I guess we'll see you next year in Nashville . . . Support Your Local Association . . .. As many of you know, LASN has adopted a new agenda in regards to the ASLA as indicated in LASN's "Vision 2000" published at the top of this page throughout the year. As such, we are trying to encourage greater participation from members of the profession and feel that while diversity can be effective, one of the best ways to affect change is to join the Society and thus gain the right to express your views and mold the profession. As such, we are including in this issue a copy of the ASLA Membership application (see page 43) and encourage you non-ASLA'ers to get involved . . . Congratulations to the Class of Fellows 1998!!! As a part of the aforementioned Vision 2000, LASN decided to support the Annual Meeting and sponsor the Fellows Investiture Reception and Dinner held October 3rd at the DoubleTree Hotel in Portland. In addition, we have included in this issue a special pullout section with a short biography on this year's class. Being elected to the College of Fellows is a special honor bestowed upon the Society's movers and shakers who have contributed to the growth of the profession. Turn to page 27 and keep this section for posterity . . . Attention Chapters and Associations . . . . . The Annual LASN Yearbook is coming your way this December and, as always, we like to publish pictures of your biggest events . . . . So, send us your photos . . . send us your slides . . . send us tickets for next year . . . but send us something on the event and we'll try to pick the shots with the most people (the more faces in the crowd the better) and help you build next year events by showcasing the fun and fellowship of this years . . . .
