Research shows that spider bites are rare and over-reported. As examples, a family of four in Kansas collected 2,055 brown recluse spiders over six months in their home but had suffered no bites in eight years. In six years, Florida poison control centers received 844 brown recluse bite reports even though none of the spiders have been found in that state.
